Key Aspects of the Festival
- Diverse Music: The event features hundreds of performers across roughly 10 stages, covering genres such as pop, rock, hip-hop, EDM, and indie.
- Art & Atmosphere: Beyond music, the grounds are filled with massive, interactive art installations and sculptures, alongside iconic features like a large Ferris wheel.
- Fashion & Influencers: Coachella has evolved into a major fashion event where celebrities and influencers showcase “desert boho” and avant-garde styles, often driving global trends.
- Camping & Culture: Many attendees camp on-site in tents or RVs, though the festival is also known for luxury “glamping” and high-end VIP experiences
Quick History
- Origins: Founded by Paul Tollett and Rick Van Santen of Goldenvoice in 1999. It was partially inspired by a 1993 Pearl Jam concert held at the same venue to boycott Ticketmaster.
- Growth: Initially a two-day event that struggled financially, it expanded to three days in 2007 and added a second identical weekend in 2012 to meet massive demand.
- The Name: The name “Coachella” reportedly originated from a printing typo; early developers intended to name the town “Conchilla” (Spanish for “little shell”), but the misspelled version stuck
